About

At Coega Kop Water Treatment Works (WTW), Stewart and Partners delivered an inwards-looking ‘operator-centric’ architectural design that places people and their safety first. Security is essential at water treatment facilities where staff have shifts covering the day and night, and where complex machinery is housed. While most water treatment plants have separate process buildings, the compact site that condenses functions into one unit makes Coega Kop WTW unique.

Seven years since the project’s inception, the development has faced unprecedented hurdles such as water shortages during periods of severe drought. Driven by a team of young professionals, all under 35 years of age, commissioning the facility is an essential step to collaboratively secure water for the future.

The facility has capacity to pump 20 million litres of water a day. Situated near the Port of Coega and the Industrial Development Zone in Port Elizabeth, water is abstracted and purified from a wellfield.
