Kelvin Street
Tucked within one of Cape Town’s most historically significant neighbourhoods, this Victorian-era home—protected under a heritage overlay—was reimagined for a professional couple and their growing family.
Respecting the heritage fabric, the original street-facing façade remains intact, preserving its period character and contribution to the streetscape. To the rear, however, a bold contemporary addition introduces a deliberate contrast in form, materiality, and expression. This lightweight steel and glass structure offers a modern counterpoint to the solidity and ornament of the original building—an architectural dialogue between past and present.
The addition includes generous indoor-outdoor living spaces, light-filled interiors, and a reconfigured layout that enhances spatial flow and functionality, creating a vibrant family home that honours its past while embracing the future.
