Faure Water Re-use Plant Concept
The Faure New Water Scheme is a cornerstone of Cape Town’s long-term strategy to ensure water security, producing up to 100 million litres of potable water daily through the purification of treated effluent from the Zandvliet Wastewater Treatment Works. This water is blended with dam water and further refined at the Faure Water Treatment Plant before being distributed across the city. As part of the City’s New Water Programme, the project contributes to the goal of generating 300 million litres per day from alternative sources by 2030.
Stewart & Partners’ design response reflects a synthesis of the scheme’s technical, operational, and environmental demands. The architecture brings together a complex array of processes, site-specific conditions, and the day-to-day needs of plant operators into a unified and intuitive spatial system. Rooted in an operator-centric approach, the design supports clarity, safety, and wellbeing—ensuring that those who run the facility can do so efficiently and effectively. It is infrastructure shaped with intention and empathy, grounded in performance yet conscious of place and long-term civic value.
